Kampala – The Fabric and its Origins
The name Kampala is of Ugandan origin in East Africa. The original nomenclature of Kampala is "Akasozi ke'Empala" now shortened to Kampala. Kampala is a large city and capital of Uganda in the Lake Victoria region in East Africa known for its breath-taking beauty and wildlife. As a fabric, the Nigerian Kampala is a fabric of beautiful colors and diverse designs.
Kampala fabric is made from crushed inner bark of certain trees and decorated with painting or embroidery. The background design is first woven onto the textile. The textile is then dyed, and the design is screen printed or stenciled on top (www.fcs.uga.edu). Candle wax or starch are also used in creating patterns whereby the candle wax or starch resist the dye to maintain a desired design.
